The Challenge: Paving the Path to Occupational Independence

About 1 in 88 children has been identified with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) according to estimates from CDC's Autism and Developmental Disabilities Monitoring (ADDM) Network.  Approximately 70% of working age Americans with disabilities are without meaningful employment.  The percent of young adults with autism who had a job was nearly half that of all young adults with disabilities (33% vs. 59% with any employment).  Add to this that research indicates that 67% of working age persons with disabilities would prefer employment to government dependency, and you should begin to see the issue.  With an average yearly disability benefit of 12,000 dollars, millions of people with autism live in poverty or become dependent upon family, destined to be isolated and, in total, amounting to nearly  300 million dollars in cost for caregivers.  Helping people with autism gain occupational skills is not just meaningful, it is crucial any way you look at it!
